Not the Person We Used to Be

In some cultures, the older we are the more revered we are to society.  The idea is that the experience collected from many years of living are valuable to the group, consequently, we may find a master carpenter teaching the apprentice how to build a house, and not the other way around.  Human nature points each of us into situations where we walk away with knowledge.  Some of this knowledge is flighty and quickly forgotten and some is hefty, staying with us until we die.  The thing is most of us do not acknowledge the daily lessons we learn, probably, because we are too busy learning the new daily lessons.  However, if we sat down, and really examined our lives, we would see that we are not the person we used to be.

mahatma gandhi quoteThink about it for a minute. What have we learned since last year? Have we grown? Of course, for better or worse, we have expanded our thinking as we experience and learn things we did not know before that time. For instance, if we buy a new house and we have never owned a house before, we learn how to take care of a house. We mow the lawn, by which we had to purchase the lawn mower. We learn about lawn mowers, lawn care, and how to be safe while mowing the lawn. We did not know any of this information before the purchase of the house. Therefore, we have grown and changed.

Mahatma Gandhi, who led India peacefully out from under British rule, said, “Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” This wise advice rings true as many of us are actually living longer and longer.  The oldest amongst us are the keepers of skills that many of us will never know or encounter.  Grandparents can share their memories of history, cooking the perfect pot roast, how to change a tire, sewing a pair of curtains, photos of family vacations, the Beatles, or the art of playing monopoly. This library of knowledge collected through daily bouts of growing and learning renews and changes each of us.

Often, we think that our personality, our beings are static. Come on, we have all heard “You can’t change a leopard’s spots.” Literally, there is truth to that statement; however, as it relates to people, a little reflection on the past will tell us this is not true. We are constantly moving forward like swollen rivers, picking up bits of information and new sources making our minds larger and expansive. Even the couch potato, that spends every evening engrossed in the shenanigans of TV characters, modifies the brain and learns something not known before. We transform into someone new; so, that in merely a small bit of time we are not the same.

The moment we roll out of bed in the morning marks the opportunity to start a new person. It is comforting to know, that what we were last night will be very different today. Our conversion will happen by whatever knowledge we acquire and the experiences we obtain.  Therefore, we are not the person we used to be.

Obsession TV

Posted on

Did you ever think that maybe as a society we have gone over the top? On Tuesday, the Japanese electronics giant, Sharp, announced that they were introducing a new 90” LED TV.  This TV is 4 feet tall, 8 feet diagonally and more than 6 feet wide with a depth of 5 inches.  It is said to weigh 141 pounds. It has all the features one could want: it is even 3-D ready and comes with its own set of 3-D glasses. All this for only $10,999.99!

This would be a great buy for someone who needs to have a giant TV that is as big as a person sitting in his or her living room. Since my living room is only 12×20, this unit would take up a great portion of my wall space. I would be a little worried about the 3-D feature.  I might actually hurt myself reacting to an item being thrown in the movie.

I would be the talk of the neighborhood.  I envision my neighbors bringing their lawn chairs and watching outside my picture window. This would be like a “Movie in the Park” that my town hosts in the summer. Maybe, I could even provide my neighbors with surround sound and a set of their own 3-D glasses. In addition, if I were very smart, I would provide popcorn and drinks and make a few bucks to pay off the monster in my living room.

Can you imagine the fun we would have during football games?  This would be the epitome of an “Arm Chair Player”.

When it is 20-below-zero and the Packers are playing the Bears, it would be so realistic; we would have to turn up the furnace to watch. I cannot even imagine what it would be like to view a boxing match or a soccer game.  But seriously, who NEEDS to have a 90” LED TV in their house? Is this not extreme? Do people really desire to experience the violence of the nightly news in 3-D or (God Forbid!) watch a super-large version of “Two and a Half Men”?  And, what will Sharp come up with next?

Just sitting here musing…

It’s A Punny Day

Posted on

Puns, a form of word play, are used to create humor and often require a large vocabulary to understand.  You will know a pun as soon as you hear it and get the meanings.  They usually make the listener groan…ugh.  Newscasters love to use puns as do comedians and writers.  Some famous people like William Shakespeare and George Carlin are known for their puns. Puns were also found in ancient Egypt, where they were heavily used in development of myths and interpretation of dreams.

Below are a few puns, some are mine and a few are from other “punsters”.  Feel free to share your favorite puns.

1.    I had a pool of thoughts concerning the recent economic downturn; however, they cannot hold water with the new statistics.             Jamie Nowinski

 2.  White collars are clean because blue collars do all the dirty work.       Jamie Nowinski

 3.  “No, ’tis not so deep as a well, nor so wide as a church-door, but ’tis enough, ’twill serve: ask for me tomorrow, and you shall find me a grave man.” Romeo and Juliet (Act iii, S.1)

 4.   I used to work in a blanket factory, but it folded.             www.DigitalDreamDoor.com

 5.  I made wine out of raisins so I wouldn’t have to wait for it to age. Stephen Wright

 6.  Energizer Bunny arrested – charged with battery.               www.DigitalDreamDoor.com

 8.  Two fish swim into a concrete wall. One turns to the other and says Dam!’  www.DigitalDreamDoor.com

 9.  Two hydrogen atoms meet. One says, ‘I’ve lost my electron.’ The other says ‘Are you sure?’ The first replies, ‘Yes, I’m positive.’  www.DigitalDreamDoor.com

 10.  And then there was the person who sent ten puns to friends, with the hope that at least one of the puns would make them laugh. No pun in ten did.  www.DigitalDreamDoor.com

RECEIVE AND PASS IT ON

Should you find it hard to get to sleep tonight, just remember the homeless family who has no bed to lie in.  Should you find yourself stuck in traffic, don’t be angry.  There are people in this world for whom driving is an unheard-of privilege.  Should you have a bad day at work, think of the man who has been out of work for the last year.  Should you despair over a relationship gone wrong, think of the person who has never known what it’s like to love and be loved.  Should you grieve the passing of another vacation, think of the woman in dire straits, working twelve hours a day, seven days a week, to feed her family.  Should you run out of gas, think of the paraplegic who would love the opportunity to take that walk to the service station.  Should you notice a gray hair in the mirror, think of the cancer patient in chemotherapy who wishes she had hair to examine.  Should you find yourself at a loss and pondering, “What is my purpose in life?” be thankful.  There are those who didn’t live long enough to get that opportunity.  Should you find yourself the victim of other people’s bitterness, ignorance, smallness, or insecurities, remember, this also happened to Jesus.

Today there may be peace within.  May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be.  May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.  Let this presence settle into your bones and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, and bask in the sun.  May you use those gifts that you have received and pass on the love that has been given to you.  May you accept that you are a child of God.
